Free The Postcode

We support the work of the Free The Postcode campaign.

Did you know that over the years, the Royal Mail has built a database of postcodes linked to latitudes and longitudes which they SELL for huge amounts of money.  You might think this is fair enough but the point is that, as BRITISH TAX PAYERS, we have already funded Royal Mail and effectively paid for this data already.  Why should we have to pay for it again?  In an age where geospatial data, maps, and location information like GPS is so useful, why should a business in the UK have to pay for data that, in our opinion, is already owned by the British Public ?

Rather than duplicate the work of Free The Postcode we are encouraging people to visit their site at www.freethepostcode.org.  You can complete an online petition and submit your data to the public domain database.  We believe that a fraud has been committed on the UK tax payers - they have paid for the data to be collected and it's now being sold back to them at a very high cost.  We don't believe this is fair or equitable and we believe that by making our data available for free we will encourage the collection of the data from a non-copyright source so that (eventually) this unfair monopoly will be broken.

All of the postcodes and latitude/longitude data we collect is available on request and free of charge - just ask us.  Until the postcode is free please support the online campaigns to make the data free and write to your Member of Parliament asking why businesses should have to pay for something already funded by tax payers.
